From roughly 1907-1912, Hewton studied in Canada and abroad. He was known to visit and paint in France, Constantinople, Morocco and Jerusalem. He also travelled with American painter Caleb Arnold Slade and AY Jackson Several of his European works were exhibited in a shared show with Jackson at the AAM in 1913. An early article describes several of his works with Oriental colours depicting street scenes of Jerusalem. Between 1907-1912, Hewton embarked on several study trips abroad. He was known to visit France, Constantinople, Morocco and Jerusalem. Early articles also note that Hewton was experimenting with different styles during this period. His 1912 trips included time with AY Jackson who shared an AAM exhibition with Hewton of several European works in 1913. An article reviewing the 1913 show describes several of his works with oriental colours depicting street scenes of Jerusalem.
