LUCY TASSEOR TUTSWEETOK (1934-2012) ARVIAT (ESKIMO POINT)

FAMILY GROUP, EARLY-MID 1980S

stone, 8.5 x 6.25 x 3.25 in (21.6 x 15.9 x 8.3 cm)
signed, "ᓗᓯ."

Family Group has a decidedly figural quality to it despite being a relatively late work by Tasseor. It reminds us of some of her charming and more “realistic” family scenes of the late 1960s. As with many of her sculptures, here the lovely triangular, semi-abstract composition is dominated by the larger head of the mother at the top. She seems to be trying to hold or gather her children around her as she gazes upwards. Family Group is an intimate scene that despite its modest size conveys a sense of monumentality.
