A Fine 19th Century Orientalist View by George Francis White. Pencil & watercolour on paper, heightened with gouache, titled & signed illegibly bottom right. Annotated in pencil script, noting authorship & title in the bottom margin, beneath the matte. Set within a vintage silvered wood gallery frame, fronted by a glazed panel.

George Francis White (1808-1898)
George was a Lt. Colonel in the British army, stationed in India serving in the 13th Regiment of Foot, from 1825-1846. He was a draughtsman & amateur artist, author and illustrator. Some of White’s graphite drawings were worked up and engraved for ‘Views in India, Chiefly Among the Himalaya Mountains’ taken during the tours in the direction of Mussoorie, Simla, the sources of the Jumna and Ganges in 1829, London, 1836. Other British artists such as J.M.W Turner, Cottman, Copley-Fielding, Cox, Samuel Prout, and others, also worked up his graphite drawings as finished watercolours. Examples of his works are in the permanent collection of the Tate Gallery, London.
