Fred Davis Mini Argillite Carving
Exceptional hand-carved argillite miniature circular panel by legendary
Haida Gwaii artist Fred Davis (1955-2014). This circular work measures
only 1.75" in diameter but is a powerhouse of carving skill. The raven
is tightly integrated into the circular format while still providing
negative space, allowing the work to breathe. The carved lines all have
subtle curves and continuity, and take note how the secondary ovoids and
crescents imply additional faces or creature features. All the while,
consider that Davis was only 25 years old when he carved this piece. The
roundel is incised on the rim "Fred Davis Dec. '80." This earlier period
was when his produced some of his best traditional formline carving,
before he focused more heavily of making jewellery.
Fred Davis was considered a master of miniatures and his works are found
in various books on Haida art as well as in public and private
collections around the globe. Davis primarily sold his pieces directly
to buyers and did not release many works to galleries, so his
non-jewellery pieces do not turn up often. Davis passed away at only 59
years of age, but his art has left a lasting impression.
This work would've been purchased new from the artist in 1981 and has
not been available on the open market until now. The carving includes a
custom acrylic stand and a glass museum box for display.
