This exquisite walnut vitrine from Paris, dating from around 1880, would have graced the interiors of the city’s elite. Typically, pieces such as this would be featured in the grand salons or drawing rooms of an aristocratic residence—often a luxurious hotel particulier or stately mansion—where it served both as a display case for treasured objects and as a statement of refined taste and social prestige. This impressive piece features intricately hand-carved swags, ribbons, and floral details and its two doors and side panels still showcase the original, shaped beveled glass, adding a distinctive charm. Inside there are three strong, adjustable glass shelves, while a lower open shelf is framed by elegantly turned and carved columns. In superb original condition, the walnut boasts a warm, rich patina that has gracefully evolved over 140 years. A truly rare and exceptional piece.
