Georgian Stick Barometer
Exceptional quality late 18th century Georgian mahogany stick barometer
by one of London's best-known instrument makers of the era, William
Cary. This barometer has the highly desirable swan's neck pediment at
the top and features hand-engraved silvered plates with a sliding
Vernier scale. Wonderful honest wear to the silvered plates from the
Vernier scale being adjusted up and down over many years of use. I
believe this is quite an early example of Cary's work, as this
particular version requires the user to unlock the door to adjust the
vernier slide. Later examples have a separate knob on the outside to
adjust the knob. The door is currently unlocked and there is no key.
This barometer is sold as found, without its mercury, although the glass
tube appears to be intact, albeit cloudy.
