Early American Seafaring Compass
A scarce early American dry card seafaring compass by Robert Merrill of
New York circa 1840. Round wooden compass housing with intact original
card in very good overall condition. Gimbal-mounted within its original
dovetailed wooden box. Lacking sliding lid. Compass face is 7" in
diameter and the wooden box's size is 10" x 10" x 7". Outside of museum
collections, very few of these compasses have survived from this early
American whaling ship era.
