Early 19th C Gold Spectacles
An early 19th century pair of solid 18 karat gold spectacles by Gilbert
Griswold of Middeltown, Connecticut. The sliding temples and crank
bridge suggest manufacture circa 1835. Gilbert Griswold was also a known
watch and clock dealer and is referenced as a silversmith working in
Middletown and Portland in the early 19th century.
Seldom do you find a set of American-made solid 18K gold spectacles from
this period, a mere 50 years after the American revolution. Only the
wealthiest of individuals in America would've possessed such a luxury.
This pair was obviously highly prized as they are in like new condition
after nearly 200 years.
