"Shadows" and signed "A.Y. Jackson"
Provenance:
Linda Lando Fine Art with title as "'Shadows' Algoma 1919 A Y
Jackson"
Private Collection, Vancouver
This painting by A.Y. Jackson was completed circa 1919, prior to the
official formation of the Group of Seven, of which he was a founding
member. The painting shows the influence in subject and technique of his friend and fellow painter Tom Thomson’s work such as Open
Water, Joe Creek c. 1914 and In Algonquin Park 1914, along with
Jackson's own tradition of emphasizing light and shadow to highlight
motion or atmosphere.
Jackson’s bold use of colour, evident here in Shadows, influenced Tom Thomson and the members of the Group of Seven. Lawren Harris
recalled of Tom Thompson and Jackson: “Jackson’s sparkling, vibrant,
rich colour opened his eyes, as it did to the eyes of the rest of us, and
Tom saw the Canadian landscape as he had never seen it before”.
