A Very Rare Early 19th Century Signed Zinc Wine Bottle Carrier

Irish Circa 1840     

                                                        

The blackened tinned (zinc) frame having six cylindrical chambers to house wine bottles, fitted with an applied open handle and raised at the front on peg shaped supports.

Makers mark stamped beneath the handle J. HODGES & SONS, 16 WESTMORLAND ST. DUBLIN.

In very good overall condition and exhibiting a wonderful old untouched surface.

Dimensions: 16.25” high x 14” wide x 8.75” deep

    John Hodges is listed in Wilsons 1820 Dublin Directory as a ‘Brazier & Pewterer’ with a workshop located at 16 Westmorland Street, Dublin. His business is later referenced in I. Slaters 1846 National Commercial Directory of Ireland, as John Hodges & Sons working as ‘braziers, pewterers, tin plate workers and house furnishing iron-mongers’ operating at the original workshop address of 16 Westmorland Street, Dublin.
