A Very Rare 4th Edition (1800- 1810) Leather Bound Set of Encyclopedia Britannica, with Canadian Provenance.

This very rare & complete 4th edition set of 20 volumes is one of only 4000 sets ever printed. All 20 volumes are bound in what appears to be their original calf-skin leather bindings, each bearing a naval insignia bookplate affixed to the marbleized front endpapers (inside cover pages) for Captain Benjamin Street (1774-1838)

Purchased directly by descent from the family of Captain Benjamin Street.

The daughter of Captain Benjamin Street, Ida Mary Sweet (1870-1957) married Frederick August Heney (1869-1946). Frederick August Heney owned substantial real estate in Nepean and Ottawa, was President of Mortimer’s publishers, was a high-ranking Mason (he helped establish the Temple on Churchill Avenue), Nepean High School Board member (helping establish Nepean High), was Reeve of Nepean Township, Warden of Carleton County, Chairman of the Ottawa Suburban Roads Commission, and President of the Ottawa Board of Trade. In fact, Kirkwood Avenue in Ottawa was called Heney Avenue until 1941. The 33-room Heney family mansion was built in 1898-1899 and occupied a considerable portion of the grounds where the Canadian Bank Note Company stands today.
