Georgian Era Marine Chronometer
One of the finest of Georgian period marine chronometers, this Barrauds
of London example, circa 1820, is mounted within an exceptional
campaign-style brass-bound rosewood case with brass bail handles and
ornate inset keyhole escutcheon and lid cartouche. Barraud was known for
making some of the highest quality Royal Navy-certified marine
chronometers of the early 19th century. This is a superior example
featuring an 8-day movement along with their patented power reserve
indicator on the dial. This indicator shows how many days are left
before the movement requires another winding. This movement winds and
works well, as does the reserve indicator. Be sure to note that this is
an 8-day movement, considered much more desirable than the more
commonly-found 2-day movements. This is quite an early example as later
dials are often marked "Barraud & Sons" after father Paul Philip Barraud
died in 1820, when sons Frederick, Joseph and John continued on with the
business.
