VINTAGE KAKABEKA FALLS SIGN
 
DESCRIPTION
Hand crafted pine or spruce  step carved base with half round ends. Old weathered paint denotes the name. It  may have served as a CPR  railway station stop sign or a marker at the actual falls site. The falls are the second largest in Ontario after Niagara and have been a notable tourist attraction since the 19th century. 
Kakabeka Falls are featured in several important early works of art and were noted by 19th century travelers and artists including Paul Kane who  painted the falls during his  mid 19th century journey through the north shore of Lake Superior. 
The sign likely dates to a period beginning early in the 20th century  and  ending with the construction of the Trans Canada highway  through the area. [1910 to 1950] 
 
CONDITION
Paint is weathered and chipped ; there is an 8 inch drying crack that has been stabilized .
 
MEASUREMENTS
About 50 inches length.

    LA DESCRIPTION
    Base sculptée à la main en pin ou en épicéa avec extrémités demi-rondes. La vieille peinture patinée dénote le nom. Il peut avoir servi de panneau d'arrêt de la gare du CFCP ou de marqueur sur le site réel des chutes. Les chutes sont les deuxièmes en importance en Ontario après Niagara et constituent une attraction touristique notable depuis le 19e siècle.
    Les chutes de Kakabeka sont présentées dans plusieurs œuvres d'art anciennes importantes et ont été remarquées par les voyageurs et les artistes du 19e siècle, dont Paul Kane, qui a peint les chutes au cours de son voyage au milieu du 19e siècle à travers la rive nord du lac Supérieur.
    L'enseigne date probablement d'une période commençant au début du 20e siècle et se terminant avec la construction de la route transcanadienne à travers la région. [1910 à 1950]


    ÉTAT
    La peinture est altérée et écaillée; il y a une fissure de séchage de 8 pouces qui a été stabilisée.

    Environ 50 pouces de longueur.
