A Rare Killarney Ware Marquetry Writing Slope,

Ireland Circa 1875                                                                              

The yew wood case is constructed with two fold-over panels decorated with marquetry inlays of arbutus (an indigenous shrub found in and around Killarney) depicting Ross Castle within a border of meandering vines, wild roses, shamrocks & thistles, the smaller panel depicting Glena Cottage. Both panels opening to reveal a marquetry & parquetry decorated interior, housing a sectioned compartment for inkwells & assorted writing implements above a striking purple velvet-lined writing panel which lifts open to store stationary, envelopes etc. The right hand side of case fitted with a locking mechanism.
