A Monumental 19th Century Copper Alloy Head of Buddha Shakyamuni, Thailand Circa 1890
An exceptionally large & finely cast copper alloy (bronze) head of Buddha Shakyamuni, demonstrating distinctive Northern Sukhothai style features, having an oval shaped head and a pronounced ushnisha ascending to a flame-shaped finial, the face effecting a benign m meditative expression with downcast recessed eyes and arched eyebrows, the beaked nose over full upturned lips and broad philtrum. The collar of the neck terminating to castellated appendages indicating it was once joined to a torso.
Exhibiting an old surface & fine patina overall, areas of loss & perforations.
Mounted atop a later ebonized wooden base.
Dimensions, 22” high, (27” with base).
