QUEEN VICTORIA CANADIAN JUBILEE HALL CHAIR circa 1897
An interesting piece of British-Canadian history here. A total of 60 of these ornate oak hall chairs were manufactured by the Knechtel Furniture Company in Ontario in honour of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897. It features a crown at the crest, and below is Queen Victoria's royal cypher applied to the backrest with the dates 1837-1897. The base of the chair has carved
griffins and large paw feet. Beneath the seat is a shelf for placing
your tophat. These chairs were purportedly given to dignitaries and
various people of importance with connection to the Queen. This
particular chair was acquired from a family whose ancestor had done work at Toronto's Casa Loma, with the chair belonging to Casa Loma's owner Sir Henry Pellatt. In 1897 Pellatt was a Major with the Queens Own Rifles and took the regiment to the Diamond Jubilee in 1897. By the 1920's Pellatt was driven into near-bankruptcy and this chair was given away as partial payment for services.
