DESCRIPTION   
The iron forged head was likely made by a frontier blacksmith from an old recycled smoothbore musket barrel and traded to natives in the western Great  Lakes area. The haft may have been native made of ash wood with four  geometric design  bands of inlaid pewter along the length and at the mouth.   Haft wood has original brown stain patina.  There are remnants of the original leather gasket in the eye  and old tobacco residue indicating long use as a pipe.   
   
TRIBAL ORIGIN and AGE   
This type of pipe tomahawk was in use by tribes of the western Great Lakes and eastern Prairie regions.  Specific tribal attribution cannot be determined.  Possibly Ojibway, Ottawa or other related groups. Circa 1790 to 1810.
 
CONDITION 
In overall excellent original condition for its age. No repairs or restorations.  Slight chipping to the blade edge . There are scattered minor pock marks on the wood haft .  Expected normal wear from use.  The iron head fit is slightly loose due to shrinkage of the wood haft over two centuries.

    TUYAU HISTORIQUE TOMAHAWK

    LA DESCRIPTION

    La tête forgée en fer a probablement été fabriquée par un forgeron frontalier à partir d'un vieux canon de mousquet à âme lisse recyclé et échangée avec des autochtones de la région ouest des Grands Lacs. Le manche peut avoir été natif en bois de frêne avec quatre bandes géométriques en étain incrusté sur la longueur et à l'embouchure. Le bois de hampe a une patine tache brune d'origine. Il y a des restes du joint en cuir d'origine dans l'œil et d'anciens résidus de tabac indiquant une longue utilisation comme pipe.

    ORIGINE ET ÂGE TRIBAUX

    Ce type de pipe tomahawk était utilisé par les tribus de l'ouest des Grands Lacs et de l'est des Prairies. L'attribution tribale spécifique ne peut être déterminée. Peut-être Ojibway, Ottawa ou d'autres groupes apparentés. Vers 1790 à 1810.

    ÉTAT

    Dans l'ensemble en excellent état d'origine pour son âge. Aucune réparation ou restauration. Léger écaillage au bord de la lame. Il y a des marques mineures éparses sur le manche en bois. Usure normale attendue due à l'utilisation. L'ajustement de la tête de fer est légèrement lâche en raison du rétrécissement du manche en bois sur deux siècles.
