FRENCH, LOUIS XVI PERIOD MARBLE AND ORMOLU PORTICO CLOCK
A large Louis XVI ormolu and marble portico clock, the enameled dial with Roman numerals, and subsidiary calendar and minute chapter rings, signed Gavelle L'Aine (1753-1802). The barrel-shaped case surmounted by a gilt bronze figure of a Guerrier, in martial attitude, flanked by chained black marble pillars with finials modeled with martial trophies, the bases applied with gilt swags, chains and tassels and set on a shaped, stepped and galleried white marble base. The pierced and boat-shaped pendulum is centered by a sunburst, flanked by cockerels.
This is an exceptionally large and well-made clock by a celebrated maker.
