A Fine and Rare 19th Century Canadian Brass Bound Mahogany Writing Box, Dated 1840
A very handsome, richly figured mahogany writing box, bound with brass strapping and fitted with twin flush-mounted brass carrying handles, the top inset with a blank brass cartouche. The interior fitted with two glass inkwells, a removable quill tray and twin leather writing panels lifting to recessed document compartments.
The interior surface of one panel bearing a hand inscribed notation that interpretively reads...’Eleanora Richardson, St. Johns Lower Canada, December 4th 1840.'
Dimensions: 5.5” high x 12” wide x 9.5” deep (19” when open).

 

This inscription & dating of this box pre-dates the formation of The Province of Canada in 1841 from what was previously known as Upper Canada & Lower Canada from 1791 until 1840.
