A Carved Schist Stele of Parvati, India, 12th Century
The Hindu Goddess Parvati - wife consort of Shiva and Goddess of beauty, fertility & marriage, shown carved in high relief issuing from a schist stele with a chip carved petal border. The semi-clad figure richly adorned with a beaded necklace, earrings, armlets, anklets & bracelets, a corded belt (katibhanda) tied around her waist holding her draped knee-length garments. Observed standing in the 'tribhanga' position, with the right leg extended and the left leg gently bent at the knee, her left hand is clutching a lotus stem - symbolizing virginity.
Mounted & secured atop a 20th century teak base.
