A wheat straw weaving pictorially narrating the early 20th c British commonwealth with animals by Arthur R. Rhodes, an agricultural immigrant to Zelma, Saskatchewan
It was constructed by selecting marquis wheat straw stalks individually and soaking them in water to make them workable. It features iconic animals representing each region - Ulster, India, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa.
Rhodes was asked to make a royal gift in 1939 when QEII and George VI visited a nearby town. He reportedly made a basket with flowers, thistles and maple leaves said to be the royals’ favourite gift.
A couple of other straw compositions by Rhodes survive in the Western Development Museum collection.
