Fossilized Giant Clam Shell
A huge 42" wide 180,000 year old fossilized giant clam shell half, of
the scientific name Tridacna gigantea. This fossil was excavated in
Kenya, hundreds of miles inland from the current coastline, where these
fossils grew during the Pleistocene era when sea levels were much
higher. The Kenyans uncover these fossils while excavating limestone
quarries.
This particular fossil is 42" x 25" x 11" and weighs close to 300 pounds.
We also have another smaller half measuring 34" x 22" x9" that is in the $1200 range.
Note that although modern giant clams are protected, these ancient
examples are of an extinct variety and are considered fossils.
