A 17th C William III Britannia silver caudle cup / porringer, Jos Stokes, 1698

William III caudle cup/porringer in Britannia silver.
Marked for 1698
Made by Jos Stokes in London.
The cup has three sets of initials, the main being the initial W over two initials. The top would have been the family name and the two beneath the initials of a newly married couple.
These cups were given as wedding presents. Caudle was a warm ceremonial drink of sack or another
type of wine mixed with eggs, bread, spices, and sugar, and was considered suitable for such occasions as weddings and baptisms, during which the cup was passed from hand to hand by the handles.
A wonderful, original example in excellent condition with minor dents.
Measurements: 3.75" x 7.24" x 4.5".
