William Winter was born in Winnipeg. He studied under Frank Johnston and L.L. Fitzgerald at the Winnipeg School of Art in the 1920's and 1930's. Both were members of the Group of Seven. He is best known for his city genre scenes with children. For a time he worked as a commercial artist at Briden's before moving to Toronto in 1937.

 

A member of many art associations and for a time President of the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour. His works are in the National Gallery of Canada, Vancouver Art Gallery,  Art Gallery of Ontario among others. William also exhibited at the Royal Canadian Academy from 1945 to 1963.
