Bright, large format oil on panel painting representing a stretch of coast along the French Riviera near Cassis (east of Marseille). A very definite impressionist influence, noteworthy are the mistral wind shaped Mediterranean pines and how the shade, the coastline, the clouds and even the surf all seem to flow in the same direction. The use of colour and light is also remarkable. A beautiful composition.

Fernand van den Bussche was a painter of Belgian origin, born in 1892 and died in 1975. Falling under the charms of the Mediterranean coast of Provence, he quickly became a renowned coastal landscape painter. Largely influenced by the Impressionists, he made light and ambient reflections the essential elements of his painting.
