Attractive portrait of a little girl with blue eyes wearing a white cap and holding a small ball in her hand. Oil on canvas, relined and restored. The gilt frame from the Restoration period, probably original, bears a label with the artist's name and the date the work was produced, 1836.

 

Jean-Adolphe Gagey, French landscape and portrait painter, was born in Paris on March 26, 1809. Son of bakers, his father died before his birth. He was a pupil of the famous portrait painter Raymond Auguste Monvoisin (1794-1870). He exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon from 1942 to 1857.

Adolphe Gagey died in Paris on May 16, 1880, at the age of 71, and is buried in the Père Lachaise cemetery.
