SEVENTEENTH CENTURY FLEMISH BAPTISMAL FONT COVER
A rare survivor from the 1670 - 90 period in the form of a religious themed oak carving depicting the Christ child at the centre, symbolically standing on a globe representing the world, surrounded by carved symbols including angels around the periphery. The font would have served as the cover for a container of baptismal Holy water in a cathedral located in what is now the Netherlands or Belgium.
The circular font itself, about 14 to 16 inches diameter, is of deeply patinated oak showing wear consistent with it's age. It was laid down at some time in the 19th century, on a circular fitted flat wood base .
Condition:
There is a small chip, about 1/4" wide x 2-1/4" long missing from the plaque at centre and another small area where there may be a small very old repair. None detract from the sculpted figures or design. At the bottom edge there is a small edge chip section about 3/4 inch missing from the plaque. Overall the plaque and its carvings are more or less fully intact showing the deep natural patination and wear expected with its 350 years of age.

COUVERTURE DE FONT BAPTISMALE FLAMANDS DU XVIIE SIÈCLE
Un rare survivant de la période 1670 - 90 sous la forme d'une sculpture en chêne à thème religieux représentant l'enfant Jésus au centre, symboliquement debout sur un globe représentant le monde, entouré de symboles sculptés, y compris des anges autour de la périphérie. Cette font baptismale auraient servi de couverture pour un récipient d'eau bénite baptismale dans une cathédrale située dans ce qui est aujourd'hui les Pays-Bas ou la Belgique. La police circulaire elle-même, d'environ 14 à 16 pouces de diamètre, est en chêne profondément patiné montrant une usure compatible avec son âge. Il a été posé à un moment donné au 19ème siècle, sur un socle circulaire en bois plat ajusté.
Condition:
Il manque un petit éclat d'environ 1/4" de large x 2-1/4" de long sur la plaque au centre et une autre petite zone où il peut y avoir une petite réparation très ancienne. Rien ne porte atteinte aux figures sculptées ou au design. Au bord inférieur, il y a une petite section de puce de bord d'environ 3/4 de pouce manquante de la plaque. Dans l'ensemble, la plaque et ses sculptures sont plus ou moins entièrement intactes, montrant la patine naturelle profonde et l'usure attendue avec ses 350 ans d'âge.
